Operating System

Taverna has been successfully tested on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Mac OS X (10.4 and higher) and various versions of Linux.

We recommend at least 1GB of RAM. Taverna will run with less memory, but its performance may be affected. Also see the section on how to increase memory allocation.

Taverna will run on any machine that has Java 1.6 or higher installed. You can download Java from Oracle.

Some operating systems such as Ubuntu, come bundled with the GNU GCJ version of Java that cannot be used to run Taverna due to some bugs in GCJ. In order to run Taverna on such systems, we suggest you get Java from Oracle.

Taverna Workbench uses the GraphViz program dot to draw the workflow diagrams.

The Windows distribution of Taverna contains a version of dot so no installation is required.

On OS X and Linux systems, you need to install the GraphViz package yourself from the GraphViz Web site and then point Taverna to the dot executable you downloaded. Setting the dot executable location in Taverna can be done through preferences in the Taverna Workbench.

Users have reported problems with GraphViz version 2.28 on Mac OS X 10.5.* Leopard. If you experience problems, then download version 2.26.3 which will probably work.
